Flash's Alter Ego: Open Source Flash
We've said some pretty disparaging things about Adobe Flash lately, but it's not ALL bad. We're all big fans of the Open Source movement here, and it just so happens that Flash has an open source alternative.
Flash for Linux
Originating in 2005, this tiny, but vibrant community (see http://osflash.org/ ) distributes ActionScript editors and IDE's for .SWF files, documentation, training and over 120 projects currently in development.
True, this doesn't resolve the issues with iPhone, nor the performance and security issues common to Flash projects. It does, however provide a public forum for (dare we say it?) positive change. If more people become involved in preserving this platform as a positive force in web development, then maybe someone will cleanup the issues that have plagued the platform these last years. A positive forum like this could even persuade the greater community to continue supporting Flash.
